28 years of highly successful practice in the areas of Criminal Law, both felony and misdemeanor, DUI defense, Driver’s License Restoration, Divorce, Custody and Family Law, and Personal Injury and General Civil Litigation. Despite representing hundreds of criminal defendants, Mr. Barker can still count the number of clients who went to prison on his fingers. Those who did go received sentences well below the maximums for their mistakes. Mr. Barker defended the most difficult of all cases, the alleged murder of a baby, and after an eight day trial, received one of the fastest not guilty verdicts in Oakland County Capital Case history.
Mr. Barker has represented numerous drivers seeking license restoration and has never had a client, who followed his advice, leave a hearing without driving privileges.
Mr. Barker has handled hundreds of divorce and custody matters. He is also a trained divorce mediator. His philosophy has always been to help people through these difficult times of their lives with compassion and always with the well being of the children foremost. He has aggressively represented both men and women. He has received the ultimate compliment of being hired by the other side to represent them in later divorces.
Mr. Barker is married. He has two daughters, a stepdaughter and a stepson of whom he is proud. He lives with his wife and three dogs, of which one is a rescue dog. He was led into legal practice by his father, Bud Barker, a retired superintendent of police and a decorated war hero. He achieved a top 6% nationwide ranking on the Law School Admission Test He graduated at 35 years of age. At a stage of his career where many classmates were having difficulty acclimating to the courtroom, he went his first four years winning all of his trials and motions.
In his little spare time he reads, plays competitive tournament golf, and with his lovely wife, does occasional volunteer work with Last Chance Animal Rescue of Livingston County. He urges all readers of this site to adopt rescue animals if they are thinking about a pet.
